As he seeks a 2nd-term for gov., Terry McAuliffe talks to 7News about his plans for Va.

Democrat Terry McAuliffe is seeking a second term for Virginia governor. On the campaign trail, McAuliffe is touting his plan to build a post-COVID-19 economy and increase spending in education to raise teacher pay.

"We are the tenth wealthiest state in America, we should never be 50," said McAuliffe. "Raising our teacher pay above the national average for the first time ever" is part of the former Virginia governor's plan.

On healthcare, McAuliffe is seeking to lower premiums and expand access to affordable care.

"At least one other candidate in this race wants a single-payer system - free healthcare for all Virginians. Is that something you support? Or do you support something different?" asked 7News Reporter Nick Minock.

"I have my own plan on healthcare," McAuliffe replied. "The goal should be to make sure everyone has affordable healthcare. Quality healthcare. My goal would be to make sure the 700,000 Virginians today who do not have coverage, which includes 100,000 children."

"I would call my good friend President Joe Biden and get a section 1332 waiver here in Virginia," added McAuliffe. "Which will allow us to stand up our own insurance program. It will then allow, also we can have our own marketplace here in Virginia."

"Do you think eligible children, who are eligible for the [COVID-19] vaccine, should be required to be vaccinated before they go to school?" asked Minock.

"Listen, I think it should be up to every school district to make their own decisions and what they want to do," McAuliffe answered. "I clearly, as governor, would have a goal that every child in Virginia gets vaccinated. I would have a goal that every person in Virginia gets vaccinated. And if a private business wants to require vaccinations before you come into their businesses, that's up to the business."
